7 Flagship Initiatives Community-led • Practical • Scalable
Kalakunj Foundation flagship programmes
WHY OUR PROGRAMMES MATTER

From community challenges to practical solutions.

Our programmes respond to challenges that are often interconnected — learning gaps, menstrual health barriers, limited livelihood opportunities, early-childhood needs, environmental concerns and family wellbeing.

Rather than using one common model everywhere, Kalakunj adapts its interventions to the community, target group and local implementation environment.

OUR PROGRAMME LOGIC

Need → Action → Outcome → Scale

Identify the Need
Engage the Community
Deliver Practical Solutions
Track Outcomes
Strengthen the Model

The objective is to create programmes that can be strengthened through partnerships and adapted for wider community reach.

01 • EDUCATION & CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Community Education Centres — Where Learning Begins.

Children learning at a Kalakunj Community Education Centre

The Need
When COVID-19 disrupted schooling, children in rural and underserved communities faced severe learning gaps. In Bhopal's Berasia block, nearly 80% of children could not benefit from online education because of limited digital access.

Our Response
Kalakunj Foundation launched Community Education Centres in underserved villages to bring structured learning closer to children. The model combines foundational literacy and numeracy with activity-based learning, communication, creativity and confidence-building.

3 CEC Centres
150+ Students Enrolled
1–8 Classes Supported

Three Community Locations
Hinoti • Garibnagar • Dolatpur

WHAT HAPPENS AT A CEC

Learning beyond
the classroom.

Children receive foundational literacy and numeracy support along with reading, writing, English communication, mathematics, creative activities, storytelling, games and confidence-building activities.

Learn • Practice • Participate • Grow

Documented Impact
Programme reporting records improved learning outcomes and attendance among participating children, along with observed reductions in school dropout and child labour.

What's Next
Kalakunj aims to strengthen the five existing centres with structured learning content, activity-based teaching, better learning resources, digital content and regular student progress tracking, while exploring expansion to additional underserved communities.

02 • WOMEN & ADOLESCENT HEALTH

Nirmaya Campaign — Healthy Periods, Greater Dignity.

Nirmaya Campaign menstrual health awareness

The Challenge
Menstruation can remain a difficult subject in underserved communities because of limited awareness, stigma and lack of access to appropriate menstrual hygiene resources.

The Kalakunj Solution
Nirmaya combines menstrual health awareness with practical support. The programme uses accessible learning material and community conversations to encourage girls and women to understand menstrual health without stigma.

What We Do
Awareness sessions, Menstrupedia-based learning, sanitary pad distribution, Pad Banks and training of SHG women in reusable cotton pad production.

1,200+ Sanitary Pads Distributed
94% Girls Reporting Increased Awareness
30% Increase in Attendance

Documented Impact
Programme reporting records increased awareness among girls, greater openness in family and peer conversations and an observed increase in school attendance during menstrual cycles.

Scale Potential
The programme's documented future direction includes expansion towards 100 schools and development of local production and retail of eco-friendly pads.

03 • GIRL CHILD & ENVIRONMENT

Anvi Campaign — One Girl, One Tree.

Anvi Campaign tree plantation

The Challenge
Environmental action becomes stronger when communities participate directly. Anvi creates a connection between celebrating the birth of a girl child and creating a living environmental asset for the community.

The Kalakunj Solution
Anvi links the celebration of a girl child's birth with tree plantation, creating a positive social and environmental message while encouraging families, women and youth to participate in local climate action.

What We Do
Tree plantation, clean-up activities around water bodies, school eco-awareness rallies, plantation festivals and monitoring through local youth groups.

500+ Saplings Planted
8 Gram Panchayats
85% One-Year Survival Rate

Documented Impact
Programme reporting records an 85% sapling survival rate after one year, increased participation of women and youth in local climate action, and improved awareness around air quality and water conservation.

Scale Potential
Future plans include stronger community reporting, monitoring and an Adopt-a-Tree approach, alongside exploration of linkages with employment and urban-forest frameworks.

04 • WOMEN & LIVELIHOODS

Karo Roshan Diwali — Lighting Lives through Livelihood.

Karo Roshan Diwali women livelihood initiative

The Challenge
Many SHG women and community producers have practical skills but limited access to markets, product development and regular income opportunities. Festivals provide an opportunity to connect traditional skills with real consumer demand.

The Kalakunj Solution
Karo Roshan Diwali is an annual livelihood promotion campaign through which Kalakunj supports SHG women to produce handmade diyas, candles and eco-friendly festive products.

From Skill to Market
The programme connects production with product development, packaging, branding, exhibitions, community sales and online market opportunities.

LIVELIHOOD MODEL

Skill → Product → Market → Income

The objective is not only to train women in craft production, but to connect skills with market opportunities and encourage continued enterprise activity.

Impact
The programme has been designed as a practical livelihood pathway that combines traditional craft skills with product development and market exposure.

Scale Potential
The model can move beyond a single festive season into year-round community products such as festive gifting, Holi products, Rakhis and other locally made products, including institutional and corporate gifting opportunities.

05 • EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Adopt an Anganwadi — Nurturing Children, Empowering Mothers.

Kalakunj Adopt an Anganwadi initiative

The Challenge
Anganwadi centres play an important role in early childhood care, nutrition and learning, but some centres can face gaps in infrastructure, learning materials and hygiene facilities.

The Kalakunj Solution
Kalakunj adopted 10 Anganwadi centres in Bhopal under the Madhya Pradesh Government's initiative, with the objective of strengthening the learning and child-friendly environment.

What We Support
Furniture, toys, books, learning materials, educational kits, storytelling and play-based activities, growth monitoring and awareness related to child health, nutrition and hygiene.

10 Anganwadis Adopted
0–6 Early Childhood Focus
3 SDGs Linked

Development Focus
The initiative connects early childhood development with nutrition, health, hygiene, learning and a supportive environment for children and mothers.

Scale Potential
The model provides an opportunity for additional centres to be supported through community, institutional and donor partnerships.

06 • CHILD HEALTH & WELLBEING

Swarnaprashan Initiative — Community Wellness for Children.

Swarnaprashan community wellness initiative

The Need
Families in underserved communities often need accessible opportunities for preventive health awareness and child wellness.

The Kalakunj Solution
Kalakunj developed a community wellness initiative around the traditional Swarnaprashan practice, delivered through community and institutional platforms with support from healthcare and Ayurvedic practitioners.

What We Do
Monthly Swarnaprashan drives through Anganwadis and schools, collaboration with Ayurvedic and healthcare practitioners, coverage of children aged 0–16 and distribution of herbal wellness information/resources to parents.

600+ Children Administered
25 Locations
0–16 Age Group

Documented Impact
Programme reporting records more than 600 children receiving Swarnaprashan in a year. Parents reported increased physical stamina in children and the initiative helped revive community interest in Ayurvedic wellness.

Scale Potential
The programme is exploring integration with government schools and other community platforms to extend access to preventive wellness awareness.
